To Play: Pelata, Leikkiä, Soittaa, Näytellä – What’s the Difference

The English verb “to play” corresponds to a number of different Finnish verbs: pelata, leikkiä, soittaa and näytellä. Let’s take a look at the different contexts in which you’re supposed to use each of these!

This article idea was suggested by Beth through email. Thanks Beth!

1. Pelata – To Play Sports or Games

Pelata means to play sports or games. This includes boardgames like Risk and Monopoly as well as computer games like World of Warcraft and Fortnite.

Pelata is a partitive verb, which means the sport or game will be inflected into the partitive case.

2. Soittaa – To Play an Instrument

The verb soittaa is used to express that you play something from which sound emerges. As such, you can play an instrument, you can play music/records and you can even ring the doorbell with the verb “soittaa”. Soittaa is also used for calling someone on the phone.

Soittaa is a partitive verb, which means the instrument will be inflected into the partitive case.

4. Näytellä – Play a Role

The verb näytellä means “to act, to play”. You can play a role, play a part. This verb is less confusing for English speakers, because you can use “to act” as a verb rather than “to play”.

Finnish English
Minä näyttelen komediateatterissa. I act in the comedy theater.
Sinä näyttelet Sofia-nimistä palkkamurhaajaa. You play the role of a serial killer called Sofia.
Hän näyttelee pääosaa TV-sarjassa. She plays the lead in the TV-series.

Te näyttelette elokuvassa Olavi Virran poikia. You play the sons of Olavi Virta in the movie.
He näyttelevät Putouksessa. They act in the show called Putous.

That’s it for the verbs pelata, leikkiä, soittaa and näytellä! Hopefully this helped clear up any confusion.

The word “autotorvi” is not common and I haven’t personally ever heard it. Not in suomisanakirja at all. “Äänitorvi”, “auton torvi” and colloquially “töötti” are more common.

“Soittaa nauhaa” sounds wrong to me. I want to use the verb “toistaa”. Like “toistaa nauhalta jotakin” or “toistaa nauha”.

You randomly use the colloquial “me soitetaan” in the examples once looks like. Maybe not on purpose?
