Cooking and Participles Interactive Exercises

Welcome to this exclusive page! On this page, you can practise both a vocabulary and a grammar topic. For vocabulary, you’re going to be using verbs that are all related to cooking. The grammar topic of this lesson is a look at the past passive forms. If includes the TU-participle and the TAVA-participle.
I hope you’ll find the following exercises useful. As always, they’re not all meant for the same level, so you might find some too easy, others suitable and some too hard.

- The basic idea of the TU-participle
We use the TU-participle to express that something has been done to the noun attached to it. For example, from the verb leikata we get leikattu vihannes is “a cut vegetable” (a vegetable that has been cut), while the verb höyryttää gives us höyrytetty siika is “a steamed whitefish” (a whitefish that has been steamed).

You can find the TU-participle based on the basic form of the verb. Clicking on the speech bubble will show you the basic form of each verb. Verbtype 1, 4, 5 and 6 will have -TTU/TTY, while verbtypes 2 and 3 will only have -TU/TY. Read more about how to form it here.

All these TU-adjectives are followed by a noun that shows you which case you will need in each sentence.

The TAVA-participle is used in necessity sentences to express that something must be done. It’s an alternative to using täytyy or pitää. Minun täytyy tiskata is the same as minun on tiskattava.
