Verb Rections – Interactive Exercises

These exercises allow you to practice the most common Finnish verb rections. The term rection refers to the phenomenon where one word requires words attached to it to appear in a certain form.

Some very common verb rections, for example, are haluta + basic form (infinitive) and mennä + –maan (third infinitive).

List of articles on Uusi kielemme about verb rections:

Exercise 1 - Verb + infinitive

Difficulty: 1/5 – Put the verbs in their basic form!

We’re using the basic form because the verb haluta is always followed by the infinitive of a verb.

Exercise 2 - Verb + infinitive

Difficulty: 2/5 – Put the verbs in their basic form! The vocabulary used in this exercise is more difficult than in the first exercise.

The verbs haluta, täytyä and saada require the verb that completes the sentence to appear in its basic form.

Exercise 3 - Verb + third infinitive

Difficulty: 2/5 – In this exercise, you need the third infinitive’s -maan, -massa ja -masta forms.

The third infinitive is used in this exercise with the verbs olla, mennä and tulla. I have a separate article all about third infinitive rections. If you’re unsure which form to use, you can get a hint by looking at the noun provided (eg. ravintolaan) and find the form needed based on that (syömään).

Exercise 4 - Verb + third infinitive

Difficulty 2/5 – In this exercise, you draw conclusions about what someone is doing based on the clue provided.

The third infinitive is used in this exercise to express what someone is doing at this moment. This is one of the main uses of the third infinitive.

Exercise 5 - Verb + third infinitive

Difficulty: 3/5 – This exercise contains the missä, mistä and mihin forms of the third infinitive.

We’re using the third infinitive because of the verbs provided.

  • The verbs käydä and olla get the -massa form of the third infinitive (missä).
  • The verbs kiivetä and laittaa get the -maan form of the third infinitive (mihin).
  • The verbs tulla and lähteä can be used with both the -maan form (mihin lähdet) and the -masta form (mistä lähdet).
Exercise 6 - Harrastaa + partitive case

Difficulty level: 2/5 – In this exercise you can practice inflecting verbs in the fourth infinitive’s partitive form. The verb harrastaa requires the partitive case.

Because harrastaa requires the partitive case, verbs will have to be turned into nouns before you can add the partitive ending. Nounalized verbs end in -minen, and when adding the partitive ending, you get -mista/mistä (eg.lukeminen > lukemista, just like ihminen > ihmistä).

Exercise 7 - Partitive verbs

This exercise contains partitive verbs. This means you need to put the verbs in the -minen form’s partitive case.

Partitive verbs are verbs that require words attached to them to appear in the partitive case. This is true for both nouns (Rakastan suklaata) and verbs (Rakastan tanssimista). The partitive ending gets added to the nounalized verb (eg. laulaa > laulaminen), and then inflected in the partitive case (eg. laulaminen > laulamista).

Exercise 8 - Harrastaa + partitive

Difficulty level: 3/5 – The verb harrastaa requires the partitive case. In addition, you need to put the object or location in the correct form.

The word order in these types of sentences gets flipped around. If the sentence contains an object, you will use the genetive case (eg. pestä ikkunaa > ikkunan pesemista). For plural objects, you will use the plural genetive (eg. kerätä marjoja > marjojen keräämistä). If the sentence contains a location case, you will retain the location case ending. (eg. istua sohvalla > sohvalla istumista).

Exercise 9 - Harrastaa + partitive

Difficulty level: 3/5 – The verb harrastaa requires the partitive case. In addition, you need to put the object or location in the correct form.

This exercise requires you to put the verb in the nounalized verb form (eg. laulaa > laulaminen), and then inflect it in the partitive case (eg. laulaminen > laulamista).

In addition, the word order in these types of sentences gets flipped around. If the sentence contains an object, you will use the genetive case (eg. pestä ikkunaa > ikkunan pesemista). If the sentence contains a location case, you will retain the location case ending. (eg. istua sohvalla > sohvalla istumista)
