Inflection of Comparative and Superlative Interactive Exercises

Welcome to these advanced grammar exercises! On this page, you can practice the inflection of the comparative and the superlative of adjectives. Please note that these exercises are not meant for beginner or intermediate students! Read more about this topic first here.

Before starting these exercises, you would do well to first practice the basic form of the comparative and the superlative with these interactive exercises.

Comparative Exercises

Harjoitus 1

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: 1/5

Find all 10 comparative forms in the following text! There are both basic form comparatives and inflected forms (eg. the essive case).

Note: the word enemmän is the comparative form of paljon. While all the other comparatives in this exercise are adjectives, the adverb enemmän is also a comparative.

Harjoitus 2

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: 1/5

Put the adjective in the comparative and inflect it in the partitive case. This is fairly simple, as it just means replacing the -mpi with -mpaa/-mpää.

Harjoitus 3

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: 2/5

Each of these sentences require the plural partitive form of the adjective’s comparative (eg. nopeampia, hitaampia). We use the plural partitive because these are complement sentences with a subject in the T-plural.

Reminder: This exercise has multiple words that end in –As. These words get -AA- before the comparative’s –mpi.

Each of these sentences require the missä-form (inessive case) of the adjective’s comparative (eg. mielenkiintoisemmassa, rajatummassa).

In the missä-form the comparative’s –mpi gets replaced with -mmA- before the inessive’s case ending.

Each of these sentences requires the millä-form (adessive case) form of the adjective’s comparative (eg. mielenkiintoisemmalla, rajatummalla).

Harjoitus 6

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: 2/5

Put the adjectives in the missä, mistä or mihin form. They’ve been already made into comparatives so you just need to figure out the ending. Pay attention to the form of the noun connected to the adjective! They will be inflected in the same case.

Put the adjective’s opposite in comparative! NOTE: You will need to be able to inflect the comparative in the cases. Use the same case that’s used in the first sentence!

Harjoitus 9

Translate the adjectives and put them in the comparative and the right case.

 

You will need: the nominative, the singular partitive case, plural partitive case and T-plural. If needed, you can click the hints provided to find the case that you should be using.

All of these sentences are complement sentences. The cases used in this exercise depend on the complement rules.

In this exercise, you will need to be able to inflect the comparative in the cases. It’s a good idea to pay attention to the noun connected to the adjective, as it can often help you pick the right case.
