Third Infinitive – Interactive exercises

The third infinitive is a very commonly used form in Finnish when we have a verb chain (e.g. mennä + asua, istua + lukea). This group of exercises are mainly aimed at intermediate students (level A2.1 +A2.2), but near the end, you can find a couple of B1.1 and B1.2 level exercises as well.

Harjoitus 1

Level A2.1 - Mennä + -maan

All these sentences require the -maan form because we’re dealing with a verb + verb construction. More specifically, we’re dealing with the verb mennä, so we need the mihin form of both nouns and verbs.

Harjoitus 2

Level A2.1 - Verbtypes

Pay attention to the third person plural form of the verb in order to find the right stem to add -maan to.

Harjoitus 3

Level A2.1 - Verbtype 4

Verbtype 4 is the one that usually becomes the source of the most mistakes, so make sure you remember to add two vowels to the stem! Another issue is consonant gradation: remember that the -maan form is strong for all verbtypes!

Harjoitus 4

Level A2.1 - Mitä olet tekemässä?

In this exercise, you decide what you’re currently doing based on the description of the context. You will use the “olla + -massa” construction to describe what is currently going on. For example, if someone calls you and asks you what you’re doing, this construction is useful. We can also use it to describe what’s going on in a picture.

Level A2.1 - All verbtypes mixed

Harjoitus 6

Level A2.1 - Miksi menet kirjastoon?

Harjoitus 8

Level A2.1 -massa -masta -maan

Harjoitus 9

Level A2.1 -massa -masta -maan

Both the location and the verb will be inflected in the same form. For example, “Olen kirjastossa lukemassa” and “Menen kirjastoon lukemaan” neatly follow a similar pattern. Some places, however, like tori, asema, kioski, kurssi and piha will use the outer location cases. This causes dissonance because the verb won’t! That’s why we get, for example, “Olen torilla kävelemässä” and “Menen torille kävelemään” rather than kävelemällä or kävelemälle.

You will need TWO WORDS in each of the gaps. Look at the example provided inside the exercise for more guidance.

Harjoitus 10

Level A2.2 -massa -masta -maan

Harjoitus 11

Level A2.2 -massa -masta -maan

Pay attention to the verb of the sentence to figure out which form to use (e.g. mennä + maan, olla + massa). This exercise also contains the place where the action is happening. This is also a great tool to figure out the right form (e.g. baariin > -maan, keittiössä + -massa).

Harjoitus 12

Level B1.1 -massa -masta -maan

Harjoitus 13

Level B1.1 -massa and -maan

Pay attention to nouns that get -lla rather than -ssa, such as kurssi, tori, asema, piha and kioski!

Harjoitus 14

Level B1.1 - Rections with -maan

There are many verbs in Finnish that require the verb connected to them to be inflected in the -maan form. I recommend paying special attention to the meaning of these sentences rather than just conjugating the verbs!

Harjoitus 15

Level B1.1 - Using -malla

The -malla form of the verb can be used to express, for example, how you prepare something. It specifically expresses the actions you take to prepare for the event.

Harjoitus 23

Level B1.2 - Saada tekemään

This exercise contains an advanced construction which consists of the verb saada, followed by a total object (Lauran, sinut, teidät) and the -maan form of the verb. This construction is used to express that something made you do something. For example, someone has made you cry (sai sinut itkemään) or something has made you change your mind (sai sinut muuttamaan mielesi).

Harjoitus 24

Level B1.2 - Pyytää jotakuta tekemään

This exercise contains an advanced construction which consists of the verb pyytää, followed by a partitive case object (Lauraa, sinua, teitä) and the -maan form of the verb. This construction allows us to express requesting someone to do something

That’s all for these third infinitive exercises. This is only a limited view of this verb form, so I’ll likely be adding more of these later!
