OVERVIEW of all Finnish Textbooks: Books for Learning Finnish
On this page, you can find an overview of all the books for learning Finnish that I’ve reviewed and compared in several articles. I decided that we need a page with just the names of the books: an overview of all the Finnish textbooks by type.
I’m including both books that are out of print and books that are currently for sale. This has been a hard choice to make. My final decision is due to the availability of many of these books in Finnish libraries. A large portion (about 50-60%) of the traffic I get on my website is from within Finland. This means many people will have access to a Finnish library. Of course, I’ve included mention of the availabilty of each book in these reviews.
1. Reference Textbooks
Reference books are similar to Uusi kielemme in the sense that they explain the grammar without including exercises and without clear level progression throughout the book.
1.1. General grammar reference books
Below, you can find reference grammar books that (attempt to) cover the whole of the Finnish language’s grammar. The discuss everything from phonology, morphology to syntax. They’re meant as an overview for the whole Finnish language. If you want to learn more about these books, I have a separate article comparing them:

2. Finnish Coursebooks, Textbooks, Study Books
The second type of books for learning Finnish are textbooks and coursebooks. These books generally contain reading texts, grammar explanations and exercises. They advance from easier content to more advanced topics.
I’m marking the level of each book using the CEFR proficiency levels which are generally used within Finland. These advance as follows:
- Absolutely beginner: zero
- Beginner: A1 (subdivisions in Finnish: A1.1 > A1.2 > A1.3)
- Elementary: A2 (subdivisions: A2.1 > A2.2)
- Intermediate: B1 (subdivisions: B1.1 > B1.2)
- Upper-intermediate: B2 (subdivisions: B2.1 > B2.2)
- Advanced: C1 (subdivisions: C1.1 > C1.2)
- Proficient: C2 (subdivisions: C2.1 > C2.2)
2.1. Single Finnish Textbooks
The following group of textbooks consist of only one book. This is in contrast with the norm, which is to produce a whole series of books.
