It’s my birthday, the 17th of January! The perfect time to make a little article with Finnish birthday vocabulary! Personally, I love birthdays, even if I don’t celebrate them with lots of people. Below, you can find several Finnish birthday vocabulary lists with nouns, verbs and phrases.
Finnish Birthday Vocabulary Word List
One cool word is päivänsankari (or in two words: päivän sankari), which literally means “hero of the day”. It’s comparable to the English “birthday boy” or “birthday girl”. It’s often used specifically for children, but you’re bound to also hear it when adults are the center of a celebration.

Finnish Birthday Vocabulary Verbs
Finns are quite fond of the verb viettää “to spend (time)” with celebrations: vietän syntymäpäivääni tammikuussa. In English, the phrase would be more natural as “I celebrate my birthday in January”.

“I’m Turning 30” in Finnish
When talking about your birthday and how old you are, you should get acquainted with the verb täyttää. It means “to fill”, but is used with birthdays to express how old you’re getting.
Another important phrase to learn is pyöreät vuodet “round years”. This is how Finns refer to turning 20, 30, 40, etc. The phrase Täytän pyöreitä vuosia doesn’t specify which “round year” you’re “filling”. This becomes clear from the context, or you have to mention it seperately.
