Finnish Noun Rections – Noun + Noun

This article is all about noun rections: fixed case endings that are used with certain nouns. Finnish has many different types of rections.
- Finnish is known especially for its verb rections.
- There is also a large amount of adjective rections.
In this article, we will only look at noun rections where a noun is connected to another noun, requiring the latter to appear in a certain case. There are also noun rections where the noun is connected to a verb. I have decided to make a separate article about those, which will be coming soon!
1. What Are Noun Rections?
- Annalla on ratkaisu tähän ongelmaan. (Anna has a solution to this problem)
- Annalla on käsitys tästä ongelmasta. (Anna has an understanding of this problem)
- Annalla on kysymys tästä ongelmasta. (Anna has a question about this problem)
As you can see in the examples above, the only different word in the three example sentences is the noun. Each of these nouns require the word connected to them to appear in a certain form. In English, you usually use prepositions (at, for, to, from, of) for this purpose. Finnish uses location cases (e.g. -lle, -ssa, -sta).
To make things more complicated, some nouns have multiple different rections. For example, the noun kysymys can be seen from three viewpoints.

Sometimes nouns have two rections in one sentence. This is especially common for complement sentences. I have largely avoided these types of sentences in this article, but two clear examples are the nouns hyöty and merkitys.

2. Noun + Noun Rections
I’ve organized the nouns in the following lists alphabetically. I’ve chosen to give multiple examples in most cases, in order to give you more of an idea of how these nouns are used.
Please note that some nouns can have multiple meanings, which require different noun rections. Avoid confusion by paying attention to the translations. I’ve simplified these lists by leaving out nouns that clearly have multiple rections. Those can be addressed later in a more in-depth article.
2.1. Noun Rections + Mistä
The following noun rections are all accompanied by a noun in the mistä-form (the elative case). This is by far the largest category on this page.

This smaller group has some nouns that require the noun attached to them to be inflected in the mille-form (the allative case). These are generally harder for students to remember!

3. Some examples of multiple rections
In the table below, I’ve randomly picked the nouns aihe, apu, haave and ehdotus to show you more clearly how one noun can have multiple rections. If you can, it’s a good idea to invest in the book Tarkista tästä. It’s an alphabetical list of words (verbs, nouns and adjectives), where you can find the most common rections for each word listed. It’s especially useful when you have a specific noun in mind.

That’s all for noun rections for now!
What’s the difference between “tuleva” and “tulevaisuus”? I’ve noticed that you use both here. Can “tuleva” be also used as a noun? Usually it’s an adjective or the present active participle of the verb “tulla”, while “tulevaisuus” is a noun.
I did use both of those words quite a lot didn’t I, hehe! I didn’t even realize.
Tuleva is indeed often an adjective or participle, but can be used as a noun as well. I suppose you could translate tulevaisuus as “future” and tuleva as “future events; what’s coming”.
A better translation for “aavistus tulevasta” would be “a hunch about what’s coming” rather than “a hunch about the future”. Similarly, “toivo tulevasta” is hope that what’s coming will be good. You might be able to recognize how that ties in with the participle.

So a rection is verb or noun or adjective, or simply a word that introduces a preposition.
Hmmm, not quite. A rection is the **phenomenon** of a word requiring a certain **case** for words connected to it. Verbs, nouns and adjectives can all have a rection, ie. a requirement for a specific case when they have a word connected to them.
