Finnish Miltä Phrases - Ammatiltani Koulutukseltani

Finnish has a bunch of miltä phrases, which are definitely worth learning! This article was inspired by a more limited list about the topic in the book Suomen kieli kuntoon 2 (by Ulla Helena Lehtonen and Tarja Ruohonen), which is unfortunately no longer in print.

All the phrases in this article contain the ablative (-lta/-ltä) case and a possessive suffix (-ni, -si, etc.). These phrases are used to describe what someone is like in a certain area of their existence (their looks, their education level, their size). Also included are phrases that aren’t used for people but rather for situations, products or systems.

I’ve tried to list these miltä phrases based on how commonly used they are. As such, the most common ones are near the top of this list. I start with those that are often used for people – you’re likely to have more use for those!

1. Luonteeltani

When describing what type of person someone is by nature, temperamentally, we can use the word luonne “character, personality”, combined with the ablative case and a possessive suffix. This phrase is most often used for people, but it can also be used to describe the nature of a situation, process or event. The following examples should illustrate what I mean.

Olet luonteeltasi huoleton.	You are carefree by nature.
Hän on luonteeltaan lempeä.	He is gentle by nature.
Olemme luonteeltamme luovia.	We’re creative by nature.
Olette luonteeltanne iloisia.	You’re happy by nature.
He ovat luonteeltaan rauhallisia.	They’re calm by nature.
Asia on luonteeltaan ainutlaatuinen.	The matter is unique in nature.
Turvatarkastus on luonteeltaan rutiinitarkastus	The security screening is routine in nature.

Instead of using luonteeltaan, you can also just use the adjectives or describe your personality with verbs and such: “Olen suorasukainen ja rehellinen ja pyrin realistisuuteen.”

2. Ammatiltani

You can use the word ammatti “profession, job” in the phrase “olla ammatiltaan” to express what someone is by profession, by trade, by occupation. Rather than just stating “Olen insinööri” (I’m an engineer), you can say Olen ammatiltani insinööri.

He ovat ammatiltaan opettajia.	They are teachers by profession.

3. Koulutukseltani

The word koulutus “education” can be used in the phrase “olla koulutukseltaan“. You will use this phrase to describe your education, what you graduated as or what you were trained in a school to do.

Sometimes your profession and your education may not match one another, so “Olen koulutukseltani lakimies” (I’m a trained lawyer) could be in contrast with your current occupation: “Olen ammatiltani sihteeri” (I’m a secretary by profession).

4. Ulkonäöltäni

The word ulkonäkö can be used in the phrase “olla ulkonäöltään” to express what you look like, in terms of your physical appearance. This phrase is most useful online when you choose to share what someone looks like without showing any pictures.

Olen ulkonäöltäni hoikahko.	I am in appearance fairly thin.
Olet ulkonäöltäsi vieraasta kulttuurista.	You look like you’re from a foreign culture.
Hän on ulkonäöltään huoliteltu.	He has a well-groomed appearance.
Olemme ulkonäöltämme erilaisia.	We are different in appearance.
Olette ulkonäöltänne niin samanlaisia.	You’re so similar in appearance.
He ovat ulkonäöltään hyvin vaaleita.	They’re really pale in appearance.
Se muistuttaa ulkonäöltään tomaattia.	It looks like a tomato in appearance.
Hän muistuttaa ulkonäöltään äitiä.	She looks like her mother in appearance.
Akku on ulkonäöltään kuvan mukainen.	The battery looks like it does in the picture.

5. Kooltani

The word koko “size” can be used in the phrase “olla kooltaan” to express what size someone or something is. Of the phrases mentioned so far, this, comparatively, is used more with the size of things than with people.

Olen kooltani pieni.	I am small in size.
Olet kooltasi ihanne mitoissa.	You are the ideal dimensions.
Hän on kooltaan valtava.	He is huge in size.
Olemme kooltamme mitättömiä.	We barely exist in size.
Olette kooltanne yhtä pieniä.	You’re equally small in size.
He ovat kooltaan aika pieniä.	They’re pretty small in size.
Laukka on kooltaan 23 x 26 cm.	The bag is a 23 x 26 cm in size.
Kamera on kooltaan pieni.	The camera is small in size.
Asuntoni on kooltaan 30 m².	My apartment is 30 m² in size.

6. Tyyliltäni

The word tyyli “style” can also be used in the phrase “olla tyyliltään“. It’s hard to narrow down what “style” can be related to, but at least it includes things like minimalism or clothing styles. In addition to just plain tyyliltään, you can also use the word pukeutumistyyliltään.

Olet tyyliltäsi hempeä romantikko.	You’re a gentle romantic in style.
Hän on tyyliltään arvosijoittaja.	He’s a value investor in his style.
Olemme tyyliltämme hyvin erilaisia.	We have really different styles.
Olette tyyliltänne minimalisteja.	You are minimalists in style.
He ovat tyyliltään luonnollisia.	They are natural in style.
Kampaus on tyyliltään juhlaan sopiva.	The hairdo is a suitable style for the party.

7. Mieleltäni

As we go further down this list, we get to phrases which are fairly rarely used. The word mieli “mind” can be used to express what someone is like mentally in the phrase olla mieleltään.

Don’t confuse this one with mielestäni!

Et ole mieleltäsi terve.	You’re not healthy mentally.
60-vuotias on mieleltään 26.	The 60 yo is mentally 26.
Olemme mieleltämme seikkailijoita.	Mentally, we are adventurers.
Olette mieleltänne haaveilijoita.	You are dreamers in your mind.
He ovat mieleltään yhä teini-ikäisiä.	They are mentally still teenagers.

8. Ilmeeltäni

The word ilme can mean “facial expression” but when dealing with objects it can also mean “appearance”. The phrase olla ilmeeltään can be used to express what someone’s facial expression “resting face” is like, but also what, for example, a new website’s redo looks like.

Olen ilmeeltäni aina vihaisen näköinen.	I always have an angry expression.
Olet ilmeeltäsi isäsi näköinen.	You have the same look as your dad.
Hän on ilmeeltään pelokas.	He looks scared, has a scared expression.
Olemme ilmeeltämme vakavia.	We look serious, have a serious expression.
Olette ilmeeltänne suloisen näköisiä.	Your appearance is so cute.
He ovat ilmeeltään samankaltaisia.	They are similar in appearance.
Tuoli on ilmeeltään kevyt.	The chair is light in appearance.
Kauppa on ilmeeltään moderni.	The store is modern in appearance.

9. Maineeltani

The word maine “reputation” is also fairly rarely used in the phrase olla maineeltaan, used in describing someone’s reputation.

Olin maineeltani nuhteeton	I had an impeccable reputation.
Olet maineeltasi paska jätkä.	You have the reputation of a shit dude.
Volvo on maineeltaan paras automerkki.	Volvo is the car brand with the best reputation.
Olemme maineeltamme vähän hiljaista kansaa.	We are a bit of a quiet nation by reputation.
Lakitekstit ovat maineeltaan vaikeaselkoisia.	Legal texts have a reputation for being unclear.

10. Puheiltani

The word puhe in the plural form appears in the phrase olla puheiltaan, which expresses what a person’s speech is like.

Olet puheiltasi aika vaatimaton	Your speech is quite modest.
Hän oli puheiltaan aggressiivisempi kuin yleensä.	The way he talked was more aggressive than usual.
Psykologi oli puheiltaan ajattelematon.	The psychologist spoke in an inconsiderate way.
Hän on puheiltaan tyylitön.	He exhibits a lack of style in the way he talks.
Pyrimme olemaan puheiltamme asiallisia.	We attempt to be matter-of-fact in the way we speak.
He olivat puheiltaan töykeitä.	They were rude in the way they spoke.

11. Kulttuuriltani

Another rare phrase that belongs to this group is olla kulttuuriltaan, which is based on the word kulttuuri “culture”. It’s much more commonly used with the culture of countries than with your own personal culture.

It is, however, possible to find some cases where we use olen kulttuuriltani. The phrase “Olen kulttuuriltani aitosuomalainen” could probably be brought up as a contrasting phrase for “En ole jokin halpakulttuurinen sekasotku” (I’m not some cheap cultural mess).

Australia on kulttuuriltaan samanlainen kuin Suomi	Australia is similar in culture to Finland.
Ranska on kulttuuriltaan hyvin erilainen kuin Italia.	France is very different culturally to Italy.
Tornionlaakso on kulttuuriltaan yhtenäinen.	Tornionlaakso is culturally cohesive.

12. Rakenteeltani

The word rakenne can be used in many contexts, where it can mean, for example, structure, build, frame, or texture. When talking about people, olla rakenteeltaan refers to ruumiinrakenne: your physique, the way you’re built.

Different contexts require you to think about rakenne differently: when talking about cheesecake we mean the texture, and when talking about walls we mean the structure.

Nuorena naisena hän oli rakenteeltaan laiha.	As a young woman, she was lean in physique.

Millainen kotiplaneettamme on rakenteeltaan?	What is our home planet like structurally?
Virkkeet ovat rakenteeltaan selkeitä.	The sentences are clear in structure.
Venäjän talous on rakenteeltaan liberaalimpi.	The Russian economy’s structure is more liberal.
Juustokakku on rakenteeltaan pehmeä ja täyteläinen.	Cheesecake has a soft and full-bodied texture

13. Mitoiltani

The phrase olla mitoiltaan (from the word mitta “measure, scale, dimension”) can be used much like the phrase olla kooltaan (from the word koko “size”). They differ slightly: mitta is generally used with actual units of measurement, such as cm, mm, or m².

Generally miltoiltaan is used for things, but when talking about someone’s height and weight, it can also be used for people.

Olen mitoiltani 150 cm ja 47 kg.	My measurements are 150 cm and 47 kilos.
Olet mitoiltasi koripalloilija.	You’re the size of a basketball player.
Hän on mitoiltaan 194/94.	He measures 194 cm and 94 kilos.
Me ihmiset olemme erilaisia mitoiltamme.	We humans are different in our dimensions.
Kiekko on mitoiltaan yhden tuuman paksu.	The disc is one inch thick in dimension.
Risti on mitoiltaan 10 x 16 mm.	The cross measures 10 x 16 mm in size.

14. Hinnaltaan

The word hinta “price” can be used to create the phrase olla hinnaltaan, which means “in terms of price, pricewise”. This phrase is of course only used for things, so it appears in the third person only.

Se on hinnaltaan halvin.	In terms of price, it’s the cheapest.
Diesel on hinnaltaan edullisin vaihtoehto.	Diesel is the most economical option in terms of price.
Kamera on hinnaltaan houkutteleva.	The camera is attractive pricewise.

15. Laadultaan

The word laatu “quality” can be used when we’re assessing things in relation to their quality using the olla laadultaan phrase.

Maskit ovat laadultaan ala-arvoisia.	The masks are inferior in quality.
Nuo lakanat ovat mahtavia laadultaan.	Those sheets are awesome in quality.
Suomalainen talousvesi on laadultaan erinomaista	Finnish domestic water is of excellent quality.
Vuoden sato oli laadultaan tyydyttävä.	The year’s harvest was of satisfactory quality.
MicroSD-kortit ovat laadultaan huonoja.	MicroSD cards are of poor quality.

16. Ominaisuuksiltaan

The word ominaisuus means “feature, property, quality”. It can be used in the olla ominaisuuksiltaan phrase when assessing whether something is suitable for something.

Laite on ominaisuuksiltaan minulle sopiva.	The device is suitable for me in terms of its features.
Rannekello on ominaisuuksiltaan ainutlaatuinen.	The watch is unique in terms of its features.
Se on teknisiltä ominaisuuksiltaan paras.	It’s the best in terms of technical properties.
Laite on teknisiltä ominaisuuksiltaan vaikuttava.	The device is impressive in its technical features.
Se käy teknisiltä ominaisuuksiltaan ulkotiloihin	It’s suitable for outdoor use technically.
Se on ominaisuuksiltaan tarkoitukseen sopiva.	It’s suitable for the purpose due to its properties.

17. Toiminnoiltaan

The phrase olla toiminnoiltaan contains the plural of the noun toiminto “function” and is generally used to describe the way in which machines work. It’s often used as a synonym for olla ominaisuuksiltaan.

Laite on toiminnoiltaan monipuolinen.	The device is versatile in its functions.
Puhelin on toiminnoiltaan ihan tavallinen.	The phone is quite ordinary in function.
Ne ovat toiminnoiltaan samankaltaisia.	They are similar in function.
Maasturi on teknisiltä toiminnoiltaan hyvin pidetty.	The SUV is well-liked for its technical functions.

18. Sisällöltään

The word sisältö “content” can be used to refer to the content of a speech or course, using the phrase olla sisällöltään.

Finnish	English
Puhe oli sisällöltään ajankohtainen.	The content of the speech was topical.
Koulutus oli sisällöltään meille sopiva.	The training was suitable for us in terms of content.
Arviointi oli sisällöltään erittäin positiivinen.	The content of the evaluation was very positive.
Kurssi oli sisällöltään lukiotasoista.	Content-wise, the course was high school level.
Luento oli sisällöltään informatiivinen.	The lecture was informative in terms of content.

19. Kokoonpanoltaan

The word kokoonpano “composition, constitution, configuration” isn’t used with people. However, the composition of an orchestra or the government can differ, and we can use the phrase olla kokoonpanoltaan to express this difference.

Uusi hallitus on kokoonpanoltaan erikoinen.	The government is unusual in its composition.
Yhdistys oli kokoonpanoltaan monikulttuurinen.	The association was multicultural in composition
Orkesteri on kokoonpanoltaan sinfoniaorkesteri.	The orchestra is a symphony orchestra.

20. Sanastoltaan

Languages, texts and books can have different types of vocabulary (sanasto). When describing language in terms of its vocabulary, olla sanastoltaan is a useful phrase to use.

Keskitason tekstit ovat sanastoltaan monipuolisempia.	Mid-level texts are more varied in vocabulary.
Turkki on sanastoltaan rikas kieli.	Turkish is a language rich in vocabulary.
Kappaleen teksti on sanastoltaan helppo.	The chapter’s text is easy in its vocabulary.

Note!

In all the examples above, I’ve limited myself to miltä phrases with the verb olla. However, it is possible to use other verbs as well. The most common ones are muistuttaa, sopia and poiketa.
