Välissä Välillä - The Difference Between

Välissä and välillä can both be translated as “between”. The basic difference between the two is fairly easy to understand, but sometimes it’s more complicated. Both välissä and välillä are postpositions.

1. Välissä

The postposition välissä is generally used for things that are physically located between two things. However, they don’t have to be physical things. What matters is that there are two things that stay put at a specific distance from each other and something stays between the two things.

Seinän ja sohvan välissä on pölyä.	There’s dust between the wall and the sofa.
Kahden puun välissä on talo.	There’s a house between the two trees.

2. Välillä

The postposition välillä is also translated as “between”, but it generally can be undestood as a movement between two things, which connects the two things to each other. These things can be both physical and immaterial.

A concrete example could be a bus connecting two cities. In a more abstract sense, we could talk about the communication between home and kindergarten, where the information goes back and forth.

In addition, välillä is also used to talk about time spans (e.g. between two and three o’clock). On its own (without a genitive) välillä means “sometimes”.

4. Inflection of Välissä and Välillä

Both välissä and välillä can be inflected in the mistä and the mihin forms. In fact, these are both forms of the word väli and can be inflected in some other cases as well, such as the partitive (e.g. vähän väliä).

4.1 Välissä – Välistä – Väliin

The basic, concrete difference in meaning between these three forms is simply the difference in general between the missä, mistä and mihin form. However, you can find väliltä in certain phrases, which I’ve added to the table below:

4.3. Väliä

The partitive form of väli is used in certain phrases that are worth look at as well. In the table below, the construction [olla + -lla + väliä] is related to whether something matters. The phrase vähän väliä is often used to express the fairly frequent reccurence of something. The phrase hällä väliä expresses indifference.

The plural forms of väli (välit : välejä : väleissä : väleihin etc.) are used to express the relationship between people. The plural forms are used for this
