The purpose of this article is to let you compare the difference in meaning between a group of similar sentences. It consists of phrases that have expressions of time – ajanilmaukset – in them.

Traveling around Christmas time

Sentence Explanation
Matkustan Ouluun jouluksi. I will be in Oulu for the whole duration of Christmas.
Matkustan Ouluun joulun aikana. I will be traveling during the Christmas period.
Matkustan Ouluun ensi jouluna. I will be traveling to Oulu next Christmas.
Matkustin Ouluun viime jouluna. I traveled to Oulu last Christmas.
Matkustan Ouluun joka joulu. I travel to Oulu every Christmas.
Matkustan Ouluun joka toinen joulu. I travel to Oulu every other Christmas.

Reading for an hour

Sentence Explanation
Luen kirjat tunnissa. I will finish reading them in one hour.
Luen kirjat kahdessa tunnissa. I will finish reading them in two hours.
Luen kirjat puolessa tunnissa. I will finish reading them in half an hour.
Luen kirjat tunniksi. I will read for the duration of an hour.
Luen kirjat tunnin ajan. I will read for the duration of an hour.
Luen kirjat vajaan tunnin ajan. I will read for a bit less than an hour.
Luen kirjat tunnin. I will read for the duration of an hour.
Luen kirjat tunnin sisällä. I will finish reading them within one hour.

Se alkaa kolmen aikaan. It starts around three o’clock.

Se ei ala kolmelta. It won’t start at three o’clock.

Lasting a Week

Sentence Explanation
Se kestää viikon. It will take a week.
Se kestää kolme viikkoa. It will take three weeks.
Se kestää ensi viikkoon asti. It will take until next week.
Se kestää tämän viikon. It will take this whole week.
Se kestää koko viikon. It will take the whole week.
Se kestää viikkoja. It will take weeks.

Studying for a week

Sentence Explanation
Opiskelen suomea viikon. I will study Finnish for a week.
Opiskelen suomea viikon ajan. I will study Finnish for the duration of a week.

In Suomen mestari 3 there is a sentence Perinteistä Helsinki-päivää vietetään tänä vuonna kokonainen viikko. Why isn’t it kokonaisen viikon? Just like Opiskelen suomea viikon or Opiskelen suomea koko viikon.

That’s a great question! If your Finnish is good enough and you like reading about grammar, this is a case of an OSMA (an adverb expressing quantity that behaves like it’s an object: https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSMA).

Perinteistä Helsinki-päivää vietetään tänä vuonna kokonainen viikko – The verb is passive, the object of a passive sentence appears in the basic form rather than the genetive case.

Opiskelen suomea koko viikon – Active sentence, so genetive.
Opiskellaan suomea koko viikko! – Passive sentence, so basic form.

I was wondering about the phrase ‘siihen aikaan’ = ‘at that time’. This phrase is in the illative, but it has a temporal locative meaning. So why is it not ‘sinä aikana’?

“Sinä aikana” also exists. It’s used when referring to a previously determined very specific time span. “Opin paljon sinä aikana” (I learned a lot during that time period, maybe within one school day). “Siihen aikaan” is much less specific, it refers to a point in time: “Olen siihen aikaan vielä opiskelija” (I was a student still at the time).
