2. Words expressing relative location
The words in this section express where something is in relation to the speaker or other places. I’ve marked the genitive case in the following examples with green: these sentences have a postpositions. The partitive case is marked in red: these sentences have a preposition. The words asti and saakka require the mihin-form, while kaukana comes with the mistä-form.

3. “Here” and “There”
The different ways of saying “here” and “there” are of course often present when giving directions. The tables below give you an overview, but you should also check out my article on how to say “here” and “there” in Finnish.

4. Asking for Directions in Finnish

5. Giving Directions in Finnish
The imperative form is often used to give directions. You might hear both the singular (Mene! Käänny!) and the plural form (Menkää! Kääntykää!). I’ve only listed the singular form in the table below.

6. Is it far away?
Another important factor when asking for directions is of course to know whether the place you’re going to is within walking distance.

A typical problem learners of Finnish run into is that – while they can ask for directions – they find it hard to understand the answer. In those situations, you could try the following questions:
- Anteeksi, voisitko toistaa? “I’m sorry, could you repeat?”
- Anteeksi, voisitko sanoa sen uudestaan? “I’m sorry, could you say it again?”
- Anteeksi, voisitko puhua hitaammin? “Sorry, could you speak more slowly?”
- Ymmärsinkö oikein, sanoitko että… “Did I understand correctly, did you say that…”
- Eli menen tästä siis oikealle? “So I go right from here?”
- Puhutko englantia? “Do you speak English?” (as a last resort).
The two last sections should have numbers 5 and 6. Why is it Se on toinen katu oikealle but Se on ensimmäinen katu oikealla? Are both oikealle and oikealla correct in both sentences?
I typoed, it should have been oikealla. The -lle form doesn’t fit there because we’re talking about a static location. You now have 19 redeemable points!
I’m native speaker and this sounds wrong “Aja tuota katua kautta.” Should it be “Aja tuon kadun kautta”, or as translation suggest “Aja tuon kadun läpi”?

I changed the translation of “kohdalla” to “at”.
“kohdalla until Se sijaitsee [risteyksen kohdalla]. It’s located at the crossroads.” Should “kohdalla” translation be “under” in this case?
