Third Infinitive Rections – Kolmas infinitiivi

Certain verbs can be used in a verb + verb construction, where you have two verbs next to each other. The verbs below all have third infinitive rections, which means that they require the second verb to be conjugated in its third infinitive form.

1. Third Infinitive + massa/mässä

Verb Example English
olla Olen kotona katsomassa televisiota. I’m watching television at home.
istua Istun ravintolassa syömässä. I’m sitting in the restaurant eating.
seisoa Me seisoimme jonossa odottamassa. We stood in the queue waiting.
käydä* Käytkö huomenna ottamassa kuvia? Will you go take pictures tomorrow?

2. Third Infinitive + maan/mään

The biggest group of third infinitive rections require the mihin form of the verb connected to them.

Verb Example English
ehtiä Ehditkö juttelemaan kohta? Do you have time to chat soon?
erehtyä Erehdyin kertomaan asiasta muille. I made the mistake of telling the others.
innostua Innostuin lukemaan koko sarjan. I got excited to read the whole series.
joutua Minä jouduin kävelemään kotiin. I was forced to walk home.
jäädä Minä jäin kotiin nukkumaan. I stayed home to sleep
kerääntyä He kerääntyvät katsomaan esitystä. They gather to watch the show.
keskittyä Kari keskittyi tekemään työtään. Kari focused on doing his work.
kokoontua Kokoonnumme keskustelemaan. We got together to chat.
kyetä* En kykene kävelemään kivun takia. I can’t walk because of the pain.
kyllästyä Olen kyllästynyt siivoamaan. I’m bored of cleaning
lähteä Lähdetään kuuntelemaan esitystä! Let’s go listen to the presentation!
mahtua Mahdunko tänne istumaan? Can I fit to sit here?
mennä Mene nyt nukkumaan! Go sleep now!
nousta Nouse seisomaan! Stand up!
onnistua Onnistuit suututtamaan minut. You succeeded in angering me.
opetella Minä opettelen tanssimaan tangoa. I’m learning to dance the tango.
oppia Minä opin kävelemään tosi varhain. I learned to walk really early.
palata Palasin hakemaan avaimeni. I returned to get my keys.
poistua Poistuin vastaamaan puhelimeen. I left to answer the phone.
pyrkiä Pyrin opiskelemaan yliopistoon. I strive to study at university.
pystyä* Minä pystyn tanssimaan koko yön. I’m able to dance the whole night.
pysähtyä Pysähdytkö koskaan miettimään? Do you ever stop to think?
päästä Pääsin maistamaan uutuuksia. I got to taste the novelties.
ruveta Minä rupean huutamaan kohta. I will start shouting soon.
ryhtyä Ryhdytään siivoamaan kunnolla! Let’s start properly cleaning!
saapua Mies saapui korjaamaan putket. A man arrived to fix the plumbing.
sattua Hän sattuu asumaan tuossa talossa. She happens to live in that building.
suostua Suostutko auttamaan minua? Do you agree to help me?
tottua Olen tottunut heräämään aikaisin. I’m used to waking up early.
tyytyä Tyydyin sanomaan “ihanko totta”. I settled for saying “really”.
vaivautua Hän ei vaivautunut vastaamaan. She didn’t bother to answer.
valmistautua Valmistaudun hyyppäämään. I’m getting ready to jump.
varautua Varaudu odottamaan pitkään! Be prepared to wait for a long time!
väsyä Olen väsynyt olemaan aina yksin. I’ve grown tired of always being alone.

3. Third Infinitive + object + maan/mään

Verb Example English
anella Anelin häntä lopettamaan. I begged him to stop.
auttaa Autan mummoa leipomaan. I help grandma with baking.
houkutella Houkuttelitminut mukaan tanssimaan. You lured me with you to go dancing.
innostaa Eeva innosti minua yrittämään. Eeva inspired me to try.
jättää Eeva jätti minut yksin itkemään. Eeva left me alone to cry.
kannustaa Kannustin häntä yrittämään uudestaan. I encouraged her to try again.
kehottaa* Kehotin äitiä hiljentämään vauhtia. I urged my mother to slow down.
kutsua Kutsutko sinä miehet syömään? Will you invite the men to come eat?
käskeä* Liisa käski Mattia menemään ulos. Liisa order Matti to leave.
lähettää Liisa lähetti Matin ostamaan ruokaa. Liisa sent Matti to go buy food.
määrätä Hän määräsi sotilaat valmistautumaan. He ordered the soldiers to prepare.
neuvoa Jari neuvoi minua muuttamaan pois. Jari advised me to move away.
opettaa Äiti opetti minua puhumaan totta. Mom taught me to speak the truth.
pakottaa Jari pakotti minut muuttamaan pois. Jari forced me to move away.
painostaa Jari painosti minua muuttamaan pois. Jari pressured me to move away.
pyytää* Pyysin tätiä meille syömään. I asked auntie to come eat with us.
päästää Hän päästi minut lähtemään. He let me leave.
rukoilla Pappi rukoili Jumalaa auttamaan. The priest prayed for God to help.
saada* Hän sai minut itkemään. He made me cry.
vaatia Hän vaati kaikkia kuuntelemaan. He demanded that everybody listened.

4. Third Infinitive + masta/mästä

Verb Example English
kieltäytyä Kieltäydyin maksamasta hänen puolesta. I refused to pay for him.
lakata Lakkaan lukemasta vasta aamuyöllä. I stop reading only in the early morning.
luopua Antti luopuu yrittämästä. Antti gives up trying.
lähteä Olli lähti vihdoin häiritsemästä minua. Olli finally left/stopped bothering me.
tulla Tulen kaupasta ostamasta omenoita. I come from buying apples in the store.
varoa Minun pitää varoa liukastumasta. I need to be careful not to slip.
välttää Yritän välttää puhumasta aiheesta. I try to avoid talking about the topic.

5. Third Infinitive + object + masta/mästä

Verb Example English
estää Estän sinua ajamasta pyörällä I prevent you from driving on the bike.
kieltää* Äiti kielsi lapsia huutamasta. Mother forbade the children to yell.
löytää Äiti löysi pojan itkemästä. Mother found the boy crying.
pelastaa Äiti pelasti lapsen putoamasta. Mother saved the child from falling.
varoittaa Hän varoitti häntä ylittämästä katua. She warned him not to cross the street.

That’s it for third infinitive rections! There are other verbs that have a different rection. Verbs that require a different infinitive for example, like these infinitive verb rections.

I just realized the forms of the third infinitive correspond with the kind of verb it is. Static verbs tend to have -ssa, and movement verbs tend to have -an,-sta. There’s obvious exceptions of course.

Lauseessa Onnistuit suututtamaan minua totaaliobjekti minut olisi parempi. Loogista olisi tulokseen johtanut toiminta: minä olen nyt suuttunut, koska sinä suututit minut.
