Mielipidekirjoitus – Expressing your Opinion in Writing
This article partly covers the same topic as my other article on expressing you opinion. You should definitely go read that one first! This article takes a closer look at phrases you could use in an opinion piece – mielipidekirjoitus, while the other article is more focused on expressing your opinion in conversations. Of course, these two situations overlap to some extent. For example, the phrase “Olen sitä mieltä, että…” (I am of the option that…) is very much used both when speaking and when writing.

1. Phrases expressing strong opinions – Vahva mielipide
First, you can use the following phrases in your mielipidekirjoitus to show you have a strong opinion on the matter. All of these phrases end in että, which means you should complete it with a full sentence. For example, “olen varma, että” could be followed by the sentence “suomen kielen oppiminen vie monta vuotta” (I am sure that learning Finnish takes many years). Note that in Finnish, you will have a comma in front of että.
When your opinion is really strong, you could of course also present your opinion as a fact. This is sometimes discouraged because it’s important to be able to tell apart which statements you make are facts and which ones are opinions.

2. Adverbs expressing strong opinions
In addition to the phrases above, there are several adverbs that you can add to your sentence to express that you are certain of your opinion. I’ve opted for adding the adverbs to the same sentence so you can compare their meaning easily. As a guideline, you could assume these adverbs will be placed directly after the verb, but word order is something you’ll have to get the hang of through experience.

3. Phrases expressing cautious or uncertain opinions
It’s likely you’ll also like to express some cautious opinions in your mielipidekirjoitus texts. There are many phrases to do so.

4. Adverbs expressing cautious or uncertain opinions
The following adverbs can be used in a mielipidekirjoitus to express something you’re not completely sure of. I’ve picked the phrase “Suurin syy tähän on…” as a start for each adverb. “Suurin syy” could be most naturally translated as “the main reason”, but I’ve stuck to the more literal translation “the biggest reason”.

5. Bringing up other people’s opinions – Toisten mielipiteiden esiin nostaminen
A good opinion piece usually takes into consideration what people in general think. The following phrases help you to bring up other people’s opinions.
5.1. General opinions – “People think”
This first section has unspecified opinions based on your own perception of what people might think.

5.2. General opinions – “The media, experts think”
In some cases, it can be useful to write about what is being said or written about the topic of your opinion piece in the media or by experts. The following phrases can help you start such a sentence.

5.3. Text-based opionion piece – “The author thinks”
The following phrases are used when you’re writing an opinion piece where you’re reacting to someone else’s opinion. In Finnish we call this an “aineistopohjainen mielipidekirjoitus“. This type of opinion piece requires you to refer back to the opinion of the author in the piece you’re reacting to. I’ve used the word kirjoittaja “author” in my examples, but you could also use the author’s name if it is given in the text you’re reacting to.

6. Phrases expressing strong disagreement
There are many phrases that strongly show that you disagree with someone’s opinion. These are unlikely to be used in conversations because they are so direct and final. However, in an opinion piece (mielipidekirjoitus), they can be used – take a careful look at the meaning though, not every context will allow this directness.

7. Phrases expressing cautious disagreement
Often, you will want to be less direct with disagreeing, either out of respect for the author you’re disagreeing with or because you aren’t entirely sure about your disagreement.

9. Phrases describing causes and effects
It’s often natural to include the reason (syy in Finnish) or the effect (seuraus in Finnish) of something in your opinion piece (mielipidekirjoitus).
