Us-Ukse- versus Us-Ude- Word Comparison

Finnish has a fairly large amount of words that end in an –s. These words can be divided into several groups based on their inflection and origin. In this article we will look at Us-Ukse- vs Us-Ude- words. The capital U is used to express that we can have both –us and –ys, as the vowel harmony rules require.

1. Comparison: –Us-Ukse- versus –Us-Ude-

Nouns with –Ukse– in their stem generally are formed from verbs (e.g. asentaa → asennus). The –Ukse- appears in all forms except the basic form and the partitive.

Nouns with –Ude– in their stem are generally based on adjectives (e.g. rakasrakkaus). They express a trait or characteristic. They generally have a long vowel –UU-, but some of these words also have only one –U-.

2. –Us-Ukse– versus –Us-Ude– in the Partitive

The partitive for these two wordtypes forms an interesting difference. The Us-Ukse- nouns are the easiest, as they follow the general partitive rule for words that end in a consonant: you add –ta/-tä to the end of the word. In contrast, Us-Ude -nouns will have a partitive where the final –s of the word is turned into an extra –t-.

-Us-Ukse- -UUs-UUde-
Nominative Partitive Nominative Partitive
tarjous tarjousta rakkaus rakkautta
siivous siivousta ystävyys ystävyyttä
opetus opetusta pimeys pimeyttä
koulutus koulutusta tyhmyys tyhmyyttä
ymmärrys ymmärrys pituus pituutta
vastaus vastausta mahdollisuus mahdollisuutta
kysymys kysymys tiheys tiheyttä

3. Comparison of the Singular Forms

Again, the Us-Ukse- nouns are the easiest: every singular form (other than the partitive) will have –Ukse– in it.

  • tarjous : tarjouksen, tarjouksessa, tarjouksella, tarjoukseen, tarjouksena
  • siivous : siivouksen, siivouksessa, siivouksella, siivoukseen, siivouksena
  • opetus : opetuksen, opetuksessa, opetuksella, opetukseen, opetuksena

Meanwhile, -Us-Ude– nouns will have either –Ude– or –Ute– in their stem. This difference is due to consonant gradation, where the mihin form (the illative) and the –na form (the essive) will be strong (aka have a –t– instead of a weak –d-).

  • rakkaus : rakkauden, rakkaudessa, rakkaudella, rakkauteen, rakkautena
  • ystävyys : ystävyyden, ystävyydessä, ystävyydellä, ystävyyteen, ystävyyte
  • pimeys : pimeyden, pimeydessä, pimeydellä, pimeyteen, pimeyte

4. Comparison of the Plural Forms

Most of the differences between these two groups of nouns will disappear in the plural: both get –Uksi– in all the plural forms apart from the T-plural (e.g. tarjoukset and rakkaudet).

  • tarjous : tarjouksia, tarjouksissa, tarjouksilla, tarjouksiin, tarjouksina
  • siivous : siivouksia, siivouksissa, siivouksilla, siivouksiin, siivouksina
  • opetus : opetuksia, opetuksissa, opetuksilla, opetuksiin, opetuksina
  • rakkaus : rakkauksia, rakkauksissa, rakkauksilla, rakkauksiin, rakkauksina
  • ystävyys : ystävyyksiä, ystävyyksissä, ystävyyksillä, ystävyyksiin, ystävyyksi
  • pimeys : pimeyksiä, pimeyksissä, pimeyksillä, pimeyksiin, pimeyksi
