2. Puoli Means Half

Puoli can mean both half of a whole (e.g. a whole apple vs half an apple) and half of a group of things (e.g. a group of students vs half of that group). It’s also used with telling the time.

2.1. Puoli Neljä – Telling the time

Let’s start with telling the time. The Finnish puoli differs from the English “half past”. For example, “half past three” is puoli neljä in Finnish. You can learn more about that in the article that deals with telling the time.

One interesting less obvious thing is that, in Finnish, you can use “half” without the hour. The context will tell you what the hour in the situation is: “Tulen puolelta” means literally “I’m coming at half”. It will get its meaning depending on the time of speaking, or from the context in general.

2.2. Puoli litraa – Half a liter

Generally, when used to express half of a quantity, puoli will be followed by the partitive case. This is especially the case with measurements such as litra, senttimetri, kilo or kilometri.

2.3. Puolet miehistä – Half of the men

If we’re dealing with half of a group (#1), it will be will appear in the plural puolet and be accompanied by the plural mistä-form (plural elative). The word order of these two elements is free (#2). Unusual in this sentence construction is that the verb will be in the singular (e.g. valvoo vs. valvovat).

The mistä-case in the singular (singular elative) will be used when you’re referring to half of a countable thing (e.g. half an apple) (#3). Again, the word order is free.

2.4. Puolen tunnin päästä – In half an hour

Puoli can also be part of a phrase, in which case it will be inflected in the same case as the word attached to it.

3. Puoli Means Side

Puoli also means “side”. This is also the case in English, take for example the phrase “There are two sides to every story”. However, Finnish seems to go much further with using puoli to mean “side” than English does.

Below, I’m first listing some situations where puoli is used in much the same way as in English. Lower down, you can find some situations that I consider typically Finnis,

3.2. Typical Finnish Examples

I’m sure there are other languages that also do this, but I see the following sentences as typically Finnish. In these phrases, people perceive two sides that aren’t necessarily clear immediately.

The weather has two sides: plus and minus, above and below freezing.
Adjacent rooms can be seen as two sides: the kitchen and the living room; the shop and the storage area.
Around new year’s eve, the year has two sides: this year and the year coming.
Finland and Sweden can be seen as two sides when considering where someone was born.
Meetings usually start with an official part, after which things get more casual.
Evening and morning can be seen as two sides of the day that meet at midnight.

4. Puoli in Postpositions

There are multiple postpositions that include the word puoli. The main word of a postposition is usually inflected in the genitive case.

4.1. Example Sentences of Postpositions

The following table contains two types of postpositions. First, you can find the postpositions with puoli as a compound word (e.g. alapuolella) (#1). Next, there are the postpositions that consist of two words (e.g. vasemmalla puolella) (#2).

5. Puoli in Adverbs

There are some commonly used instructive phrases that include the word puoli. The ending of the instrucive is -in and will appear in both words of the phrases (#1). Further below, you can find other adverbs including the word puoli (#2). The last group in the table below are adverbs ending in -tse (the ancient prolative case) (#3).

Sometimes, it’s hard to decide whether something is an adverb, a postposition of a noun. For example, adverbs can be used postpositionally and so can some nouns. Some of these do come with a genitive-case main word, others don’t. As such, you should take my division with a grain of salt and not get caught up on the terms.

In a new marriage, the prefix “step” in English will be puoli in Finnish.
If half of something is missing, we can use puoli to describe the half that’s left. These are adjectives.
Sometimes there are two parts (e.g. parties of an agreement), but there isn’t a specific name for each.

There is a wide range of compound adjectives ending in either -puolinen or -puoleinen. The general rule is that with -puoleinen you need to use the genitive, and with -puolinen the basic form. However, this doesn’t explain at all when which of the two is used.

6.5. Compound numbers: puolikymmentä

Of the words below, the first and the second are in frequent use, so you should definitely study those. The rest are much rarer, but interesting in their own way! Puoli means half, so puolikymmentä means half of ten. It’s similar to the English “half a dozen”.
