2. How to Say the Bus Numbers in Finnish

When in English, you say “number one”, in Finnish you use a sperate form of the number instead, as you will see below. This is especially common when talking about bus numbers: say you’re waiting for “bus number 4”, this is nelonen in Finnish. When using the verb odottaa, we need the partitive case, so this will become Odotan nelosta.

The following two tables allow you to compare between the “basic” form of the name of the number and the millä-form. You will use the millä-form when you want to know by which bus you can get somewhere.

Could you explain more about the verb päästä. why it requires it’s object to have llä ending..Pääseekö tällä bussilla keskustaan?
Meneekö tämä bussi keskustaan?

“Päästä” means in this case “to get to, to gain access to” here. Literal translation of “Pääseekö tällä bussilla keskustaan?“: “Does one get access to the city center by this bus?”

Pääseekö is the third person form, which is slightly confusing. In English, you would you the minä-form: “Can I get to the city center with this bus”. The Finnish sentence is generic: it doesn’t ask WHO can get to the city center, just if ANYONE can get to the city center with that specific bus.

“Meneekö tämä bussi keskustaan?” asks whether the BUS goes there, rather than whether the PEOPLE on the bus can get to the location.
