Missä Phrases - Menossa Tukossa Pystyssä Jäässä

The topic of this article is missä phrases, aka phrases that consist of the verb olla and a word in the inessive case (-ssa). The original list comes from the excellent book Suomen kieli kuntoon 2, which I strongly recommend if you’re looking to expand your vocabulary with phrases.

Marked in green are the most basic of the missä phrases, so the ones to get started with if you’re looking into learning some of this vocabulary.

olla menossa	Olen menossa kauppaan.	I’m on my way to the store.
olla lähdössä	Älä nyt, olin just lähdössä.	Don’t bother, I was just leaving.
olla marjassa	Olin marjassa tänään.	I was gathering berries today.
olla sienessä	Olin sienessä.	I was gathering mushrooms.
olla piilossa	Lapsi oli piilossa.	The child was hiding.
olla hoidossa	Poikani on hoidossa päivisin.	My son is in care during the day.
olla hädässä	Poika on hädässä vedessä.	A boy is in trouble in the water.
olla vaikeuksissa*	Olin vaikeuksissa ilman häntä.	I had problems without him.
olla eksyksissä*	Olen eksyksissä ilman sinua.	I’m lost without you.
olla hakusessa	Minulla on sanat hakusessa.	I can’t find the words.
olla haussa	Virka on haussa.	The position is open to applicants.
olla kadoksissa*	Puhelimeni on kadoksissa.	My phone is lost.
olla hukuksissa*	Vihko on hukuksissa.	The notebook is lost.
olla kateissa	Lapsi oli kateissa 6 päivää.	The child was missing for 6 days.
olla paossa	Murhaaja oli paossa 14 vuotta.	The murderer was on the run for 14 years.
olla jumissa	Taskun vetoketju on jumissa.	The pocket’s zipper is stuck.
olla lukossa	Ovi oli lukossa.	The door was locked.
olla tukossa	Viemäri on tukossa.	The drain is clogged.
olla epävireessä	Piano on epävireessä.	The piano is out of tune.
olla kunnossa	Oletko kunnossa?	Are you okay?
olla jemmassa	Minulla on pullo jemmassa.	I have a bottle tucked away.
olla elossa	Elvis on elossa!	Elvis is alive!
olla hengissä	Oletko vielä hengissä?	Are you still alive?
olla tallessa	Onko puhelimesi vielä tallessa?	Is your phone still there?
olla yhdessä	Me olemme yhdessä.	We are together.
olla naimisissa	Antti ja Miia ovat naimisissa.	Antti and Miia are married.
olla kihloissa	Ari ja Maija ovat kihloissa.	Ari and Maija are engaged.
olla koossa	Koko suku on koossa.	The whole family has gathered.
olla erossa	Olimme erossa vuoden verran.	We were separated for a year.
olla poissa	Hanna on poissa tänään.	Hanna isn’t here today.
olla vastassa	Olin häntä vastassa asemalla.	I went to get her from the station.
olla töissä	Olen joka päivä töissä.	I’m at work every day.
olla kylässä	Olin kylässä veljeni luona.	I was visiting my brother’s place.
olla puheissa	Olimme eilen puheissa asiasta.	We talked about this yesterday.
olla puheväleissä	Olemme yhä puheväleissä.	We’re still on speaking terms.
olla tasoissa	Olemme nyt tasoissa.	We’re even now.
olla synkassa	Me emme ole enää synkassa.	We’re not in sync anymore.
olla uskossa	Olen ollut uskossa koko ikäni.	I’ve had my faith my whole life.
olla kiihdyksissä*	Kansa oli kiihdyksissä.	The people were in suspense.
olla kuohuksissa*	Kansa oli kuohuksissa.	The people were in turmoil.
olla kuumeessa	Olin kuumeessa kolme päivää.	I was feverish for three days.
olla kohmeessa	Minulla on kädet kohmeessa.	My hands are numb with cold.
olla turvoksissa*	Sormeni ovat turvoksissa.	My fingers are swollen.
olla pystyssä	Tukkani on pystyssä.	My hair stands up straight.
olla kippurassa	Koiran häntä on kippurassa.	The dog’s tail is curled.
olla kyykyssä	Ari oli kyykyssä koiran luona.	Ari was squatting by the dog.
olla kyyryssä	Ari oli kyyryssä käytävällä.	Ari was crouching in the hallway.
olla huurteessa	Koko piha oli huurteessa.	The whole yard was frosted over.
olla jäässä	Järvet olivat jäässä.	The lakes were frozen.
olla humalassa	Ari on humalassa.	Ari is drunk.
olla juovuksissa	Ari on juovuksissa.	Ari is drunk.
olla kännissä	Ari on kännissä.	Ari is drunk.

olla unessa	Kännykkäni soi, kun olin unessa.	My mobile rang when I was asleep.
olla puoliunessa	Olin puoliunessa, kun soitit.	I was half-asleep when you called.
olla umpiunessa	Olin umpiunessa, kun soitit.	I was deep asleep when you called.
olla unenpöpperössä	Istuin tässä unenpöpperössä.	I sat here half-asleep.
olla puuduksissa*	Jalkani oli hassusti puuduksissa.	My foot was weirdly numb.
olla pökerryksissä*	Pääni on pökerryksissä aamulla.	My head is groggy in the morning.
olla alussa	Työpäivä on vasta alussa.	The work day is just starting.
olla lopussa	Vessapaperi on lopussa.	The toilet paper is running out.
olla puolivälissä	Raskaus on nyt puolivälissä.	The pregnancy is now halfway.
olla puolitiessä	Matkan puolitiessä luovutin.	I gave up halfway our trip.
olla alakynnessä	Suomen joukkue oli alakynnessä.	Finland’s team was outclassed.
olla edessä	Oikea taistelu on vasta edessä.	The real battle is still ahead.
olla hallussa	Asia on hallussa.	The matter is under control.
olla lytyssä	Hattu on lytyssä.	The hat is flattened.
olla rutussa	Auton nokka on rutussa.	The car bumper is bent.
olla sammuksissa*	Valot ovat sammuksissa.	The lights are turned off.
olla seisauksissa*	Työt ovat seisauksissa.	The job is at a standstill.
olla peitossa	Rekisterikilpi on peitossa.	The registration plate is covered.
olla oikeassa	Olen aina oikeassa.	I’m always right.
olla väärässä	Sinä olet aina väärässä.	You’re always wrong.
olla puolitangossa	Lippu on puolitangossa.	The flag is at half-mast.
olla vallassa	Putin ei ole enää vallassa.	Putin isn’t in power anymore.
olla vinossa	Taulu on vinossa.	The painting is tilted.
olla vähissä	Tietokoneen muisti on vähissä.	The pc is low on memory.

I think you meant to use juuri, or vain.

I didn’t, but those are good alternatives, too! You should pronounce “just” the Finnish way! The FINNISH word “just” is very common as a synonym for juuri in spoken language. It’s so common that it’s moving towards being accepted in all situations.

For “Minulla on sanat hakusessa“, you could change it to “Sanat ovat hakusessa“. It’s not YOU who’s lost, it’s the words. Similarly “Minulla on kädet kohmeessa” can also be “Kädet ovat kohmeessa“.
