Demonstrative Pronouns - Tämä, Tuo, Se, Nämä, Nuo, Ne

Demonstrative pronouns (demonstratiivipronominit) are pronouns that substitute nouns. The context will reveal what noun they are referring to. In Finnish they of course inflect into all the cases.

1. The Meaning of the Demonstrative Pronouns

The simple explanation is this:

Tämä means “this”, as in “this book” or “this month”. It generally refers to things that are close enough to you to touch, when it’s used in a concrete situation.
Tuo means “that”, e.g. “that pen” or “that explanation”. If it’s used in a concrete situation, it refers to things that you can point at, but not quite touch.
Se means “it” or “that”, as in “se toimii” (it works) or “se kirja” (that book). When used in a concrete sense, it refers to things you can neither touch nor see.

2. The Usage of the Demonstrative Pronouns

2.1. As the subject of a sentence

Firstly, demonstrative pronouns can fill in the place of the subject in a sentence. The context will tell you what they’re referring to. Without a context, these sentences are quite hard to understand.

Ota tämä mukaasi kouluun!	Take this (the thing I’m holding) to school with you!

2.2. As a modifier for a noun

Secondly, they can appear in an adjective-like position connected to nouns. In this case the demonstrative pronoun will inflect in the same cases as the word it’s connected to.

Tämä kirja on märkä. → Tässä kirjassa on paljon kuvia.
Tuo puu on korkea. → Kissa kiipesi tuohon korkeaan puuhun.
Se mies ei tule. → En tykkää siitä miehestä.

2.3. In certain phrases

2.4. As a placeholder element for an että-sentence

When the main sentence of a subordinate clause that starts with “että” requires a certain rection, you will have to use a placeholder in the main sentence to cover that role.
