In this article you can find information about the word että in Finnish and its many functions in subordinate clauses and other situations.

If you’re an intermediate or advanced student, you will come across the puzzle of when to use joka, jotta or että. This is not the topic of this article, but I will be adding links as I write those articles.

1. Että starting a sivulause (subordinate clause)

The most common way to use että in Finnish is at the beginning of a subordinate clause (e.g. I knew that…). Many beginning students of Finnish tend to just leave the että out of sentences: e.g. “Minä tiedän hän tulee”, which should be Minä tiedän, että hän tulee. This mistake really depends on a student’s native language. Even in English – where että is generally translated as “that” – there are certain sentences where you can just skip the “that”.

The verbs in the table below can often also appear in different types of sentences. For example, the verb ajatella can contain että (Ajattelen, että on parasta luovuttaa.), but it can also get an object (Ajattelen äitiäni) or be used in combination with a verb (Ajattelin käydä äitini luona).

3. Colloquial conjunctions – Niin Että, Siksi Että

“Niin että” can be used (mainly in colloquial Finnish) to express certain relations which usually have another, more official word as well.

Niin että ~ jotta: is often used to express objective or intention “so, in a way that”.
Niin että ~ joten: can be used to express consequence; “so, consequently”.
Siksi että ~ koska: is used to express reason; “because”.
Paitsi että ~ vaikka: is used to add an exception; “except for”.

In these types of sentences, it’s a synonym for jotta. I will have a separate article up on the difference between että, joka, joten and jotta at some point in the near future.

4. Niin X Että – So X that

This construction is made up of niin, followed by (usually) an adjective, and then an että-sentence.

Finnish	English
Olin niin sairas, etten jaksanut lukea.	I was so sick that I couldn’t read.
Hän on niin mukava, että ihastuin heti.	He was so nice that I fell in love immediately.
Olin niin väsynyt, että nukahdin bussissa.	I was so tired that I fell asleep on the bus.
Tehtävä oli niin vaikea, että luovutin.	The exercise was so hard that I gave up.
Se oli niin hyvä kysymys, että seurasi hiljaisuus.	It was such a good question that silence followed.
Tuo oli niin hyvä elokuva, että haluan sen ostaa.	That was such a good movie that I want to buy it.
Sanoit sen niin selvästi, että jopa minä ymmärsin.	You said it so clearly that even I understood.

5. Filling in a rection

Finnish has this whole system of verb rections: the system where certain verbs are always followed by a specific form of the object connected to them. Sometimes, however, these verbs don’t get an object (e.g. tykkään sinusta) but rather a sentence attached to them (e.g. tykkään siitä, että tulet meille). In these cases, the että in Finnish does nothing other that start a subordinate clause. Read more about these!

6. In exclamations

I can’t really translate these colloquial exclamations, but I did my best. These are not full sentences.

Niin että mitä?	What the heck?
Että voikin olla kylmä!	Darn, how cold can it be!
Voi että!	Oh boy!
Voi jukranpujut että pitikin sattua!	Oh man, what a coincidence!
Hitsi, että onkin ihanaa olla kotona!	Gosh, so wonderful to be home!
On siinä sellainen mies, että!	Wow, that the kind of man!
Että sinä jaksat!	Wow, you never stop do you.
Että ottaa päähän!	Darn, I’m angry!

7. Tehdä X niin että Y

This construction is typically Finnish, which once again puts me in a difficult position when translating these. The main meaning of these phrases is to express that you do X to a major extent. Take for example “laughing till your ears flap”. This is not meant to be taken literally but rather means that you’re laughing really hard.
