Palautusoikeus – Money Back Guarantee

In Finland, if the product (tuote) you bought is flawless (virheetön), the law doesn’t automatically grant you the right to return (palauttaa) the product. Only if you order online (tilata netistä) or over the phone (puhelinmyynti), you automatically have the right to return it (palautusoikeus) within 14 days.

However, many stores do offer customers (asiakas) the right to exchange (vaihtaa) or return products. This is seens as good customer service (hyvä asiakaspalvelu). Usually, this will be mentioned on the receipt (kuitti) or on a sign (kyltti) at the cash register (kassa). Returning a product generally requires you to show the receipt. The length of the return policy (palautusoikeuden pituus) is something each store can decide upon themselves.

Often products that are bought at a discount (alennettu hinta) don’t have a return policy. This same is true for food and custom-made products (mittatilaustyö). If you buy something which has a seal (sinetti) on it, you can’t return it after the seal has been broken.

Palautin sen siksi, koska… – I returned it, because…

When you return something you bought online, you don’t have to tell the store why you’re returning it. However, here you have some phrases explaining why someone could return clothes to an online store.

Many are more jokes than real reasons. This list is based on a list I found somewhere but I can’t remember where. If you run into it elsewhere, please let me know so I can credit it!

Reklamaatio – Customer Complaint

If the product you bought doesn’t match the product description (tuotekuvaus), is broken (rikki) or breaks (hajota) almost right away, you should do a complaint (valitus). In order to get the product covered, the problem (vika) can’t be caused by using the product in a wrong way (viallinen käsittely). It’s usually best to do a complaint in writing.

Stores will generally first try to fix (korjata) the product or exchange (vaihtaa) it for a working version (ehjä). Completely canceling the trade (kaupan purkaminen) is usually only a last resort.
