Missä sinä asut? - Talking About Your Home in Finnish

Talking about your home or your living arrangements is something close to your heart, I’m sure. Next to family and the weather, it’s probably one of the most common topics. All the more reason to load up with extra vocabulary and phrases in Finnish! Let’s take a look at all kinds of different aspects that might come up in a conversation that starts with a simple “Missä sinä asut?” question!

It’s been hard for me to decide how to translate asunto. This word can be translated, for example, as apartment, house, dwelling, home or residence. It just means the place you live in and is independent of the type of house it is (ie. it’s not just an apartment in a flat). Below, I’ve used different translations in different sentences.

1. A1-level phrases: Missä sinä asut?

The following phrases are really basic examples of things you should learn to say at the beginning of your studies.

Minä asun Helsingissä.	I live in Helsinki.
Minä asun Yhdysvalloissa.	I live in the United States.
Asun yksin.	I live alone.
Asun perheeni kanssa.	I live with my family.
Minulla on pieni asunto.	I have a small apartment.
Minulla on iso asunto.	I have a large apartment.
Minä asun pienessä asunnossa.	I live in a small apartment.
Minä asun isossa asunnossa.	I live in a large apartment.
Asun kerrostalossa.	I live in an apartment building.
Asun omakotitalossa.	I live in a detached house.
Asun rivitalossa.	I live in a row house.
Minä asun yksiössä.	I live in a one-room apartment.
Minä asun kaksiossa.	I live in a two-room apartment.
Minä asun kolmiossa.	I live in a three-room apartment.

2. A2 and B1 level phrases

Below, you can find a lot of example sentences you could use when talking about your home. In addition to broadening your vocabulary, they might also help you prepare for an oral exam or the YKI-testi. This is a very common topic in Finnish tests.

I’ve tried to divide my example sentences into some sort of categories, in order to make them less overwhelming. I do hope that having these example sentences will help you. My phrases are not the only way to talk about these things, but I hope they are helpful nevertheless.

2.1. Questions and Conversation starters

2.2. Expressing how satisfied you are with your home

Minusta tämä on kiva asunto.	I think this is a nice apartment.
Tykkään asua täällä.	I like to live here.
Tykkään asua tässä asunnossa.	I like to live in this apartment.
Olen tykännyt asua täällä.	I’ve enjoyed living here.
Olen ollut tyytyväinen tähän asuntoon.	I’ve been satisfied with this apartment.
En haluaisi muuttaa pois.	I wouldn’t want to move away.
Haluaisin muuttaa isompaan asuntoon.	I would like to move to a larger apartment.
Tämä asunto on aivan liian pieni.	This apartment is way too small.

2.4. Common spaces (shared facilities) inside the building

Talossa on kylmäkellari.	There’s a cool cellar in the house.
Talossa on tehty putkiremontti.	The plumbing of the house has been renewed.

2.5. Living/Housing Expenses

Vuokra nousee joka vuosi.	The rent goes up every year.
Vuokra on aivan liian korkea.	The rent is way too high.
Vuokrani on kohtuullinen.	My rent is reasonable.
Haluan muuttaa halvempaan asuntoon.	I want to move to a cheaper apartment.
Saan asumistukea Kelasta.	I get housing support from Kela.

Ostaisin mieluummin asunnon.	I’d rather buy a house.
Omistaisin mieluummin asunnon.	I’d rather own a house.
Meillä ei ole varaa ostaa asuntoa.	We can’t affort to buy an apartment.
Pankki ei myöntänyt meille asuntolainaa.	The bank didn’t grant us a mortgage.

Kesällä täällä on hirveän kuumaa.	In summer it’s terribly hot here.
Kesällä aurinko paistaa sisään koko päivän.	In summer the sun shines in all day.
Meillä on ikkunat pohjoiseenpäin.	We have windows facing North.
Meillä on ikkunat eteläänpäin.	We have windows facing South.
Aurinko paistaa sisään vain aamulla.	The sun only shines in in the morning.
Ilta-aurinko paistaa sisään olohuoneeseen.	The evening sun shines into the living room.
Keittiössä on talvisin tosi pimeää.	It’s really dark in the kitchen in winter.
Täällä tarvitaan talvella aina villasukat.	Wool socks are always needed here in winter.

2.7. Describing the environment around your home

Tämä on mielestäni kiva asuinalue.	I think this is a nice residential area.
Tällä alueella asuu paljon lapsiperheitä.	A lot of families with children live in this area.
Tällä alueella asuu paljon maahanmuuttajia.	A lot of immigrants live in this area.
Tällä alueella on rauhallista ja siistiä.	It’s peaceful and clean in this area.
Tämä on rauhallinen alue.	This is a peaceful area.
Täällä on kaikki palvelut lähellä.	All amenities (services) are close by.
Päiväkoti on tässä ihan vieressä.	The kindergarden is right beside here.
Lasten koulu on lähellä.	The children’s school is close-by.
Asumme kauppakeskuksen lähellä.	We live near the shopping center.
Täältä ei ole pitkä matka kauppaan.	It’s not a long way to the store from here.
Täältä pääsee helposti kauppakeskukseen.	You can easily reach the mall from here.
Lähikauppa on ihan kulman takana.	The convenience store is just around the corner.
Keskustaan on pitkä matka.	It’s a long way to the city center.
Keskusta on ihan lähellä.	The city center is very close.
Keskustaan pääsee kymmenessä minuutissa.	You can get to the city center in ten minutes.
Metsään ei ole pitkä matka.	It’s not a long way to the forest.
Pidän siitä, että metsä on lähellä.	I like that the forest is close-by.
En muuttaisi maaseudulle.	I wouldn’t move to the countryside
En muuttaisi kaupunkiin.	I wouldn’t move to the city.
Sijainti on erinomainen.	The location is excellent.
Täältä pääsee helposti keskustaan.	You can easily get to the city center from here.
Täältä on suora bussiyhteys keskustaan.	There’s a direct bus connection to the center from here.
Täällä on hyvät liikenneyhteydet.	There are great transport connections here.
Täällä kulkee jatkuvasti busseja.	Buses constantly pass here.
Täällä on helppoa matkustaa julkisella liikenteellä.	It’s easy to travel by public transport here.
Bussipysäkki on juuri talomme edessä.	The bus stop is right in front of our house.
Bussipysäkille ei ole pitkää matkaa.	There’s not a long distance to the bus stop.

2.8. Talking about your neighbors

Finnish	English
Vuokranantajani on ystävällinen.	My landlord is friendly.
Naapurin mummon kanssa on kiva keskustella.	It’s nice to talk with the neighbor’s grandma.
Naapurimme ovat tosi avuliaita.	Our neighbors are very helpful.
Naapurit ovat tosi ihania.	The neighbors are really wonderful.
Pidän tosi paljon meidän naapureista.	I really like our neighbors.
Minulla on kamalia naapureita.	I have terrible neighbors.
Kuulen kaiken, mitä naapurini puuhaavat kotonaan.	I hear everything my neighbors do in their home.
