Talking to Coworkers – Finnish Workplace Conversation Phrases

This article contains useful phrases to use when getting to know your new colleagues when you start a work practice (työharjoittelu or kieliharjoittelu) or find a job! Talking to coworkers is often somewhat difficult because Finns are known for not being good at small talk. The phrase “There is no such thing as awkward silences, only awkward small talk” should get a chuckle out of many Finns.
In general, it’s common for Finns to be less talkative around people they don’t know. This can lead to situations where your attempts at talking to coworkers are seen as intrusive. You don’t want to be that annoying nosey colleague (ärsyttävä yliutelias työkaveri) who is constantly asking things.

I hope you can pick up some sentences from this article to use when talking to coweworkers at the Finnish workplace. I’ve provided both non-intrusive and more direct questions, but it’s up to you to decide which ones are suitable when talking to your coworkers.
Haha, thank you so much for making the list. I also used to have the idea that Finns in general don’t want to talk much, so I didn’t think about the socialising part before I started my internship. I was so unprepared when my main colleague kept on chatting with me and I was not yet comfortable that time to talk Finnish with adults. She ended up writing on the feedback that I talked a lot to the kids but not to colleagues (Honestly somewhat surprised she expected me to socialise haha. But I should have known!)

I work at a local K-Market for about a year, and as I still don’t have the hours for listening, I have trouble understanding them. They learned about me through observation, aka they know the things I like and how I work. They think I am a “nice guy” because I’m always trying to help everyone lol but this is another one of those culture shocks Finns tend to run into with Americans.
Anyway, I don’t bother my coworkers. They also have this idea that I don’t know any Finnish lol. I can read and write it. That ever present wanting to end the conversation right away is always there, so I ask a few things like how to do something or where something is and that’s it. I honestly get more social interaction from the customers.
