At the Doctor’s – Lääkärillä

In this article, we will be looking at some phrases you could use or hear when you’re at the doctor’s office. This page is fairly limited, but you can learn more vocabulary on the page about illnesses.

1. Kysymyksiä lääkärikäynnillä – Questions at the doctor’s office

2. Oireiden kuvailu – Describing the symptoms

Minua pyörryttää. I feel dizzy.
Minä olen sairas. I’m sick.
Minä voin pahoin. I feel sick.
Minulla on huono olo. I feel bad.
Minä olen vilustunut. I have a cold.
Tähän koskee. It hurts here.
Minua oksettaa. I feel like throwing up / I’m nauseous.
Olen oksentanut. I have thrown up.

3. Lääkärin kehotuksia – Doctor requests

Riisu alusvaatteisiisi / alusvaatteisillesi. Strip down to your underwear.
Ota paita pois. Riisu paitasi. Remove your shirt.
Otapa kenkä pois. Please remove your shoe.
Hengitä sisään! Breathe in!
Hengitä ulos! Breathe out!
Hengitä ihan normaalisti! Just breathe normally!
Hengitä ulos hitaasti! Breathe out slowly!
Pidätä hengitystäsi! Hold your breath!
Älä pidätä hengitystäsi. Don’t hold your breath.
Tutkitaan vähän! Let’s check this out!
Punnitaan sinut / teidät. Let’s weigh you (singular / plural).
Mikä verran painatte? How much do you weigh?
Kurkistetaan korviin. Let’s take a look in your ears.
Anna kun kuuntelen keuhkoja. Let me listen to your lungs.
Mitataan verenpainetta. Let’s measure your blood pressure.
Katsotaanpa sitten verenpaineet. Let’s look at the blood pressure then.
Näytä kieltäsi. Show your tongue.
Nousepa seisomaan. Please stand up.

4. Lääkärin päätelmiä – Doctor’s conclusions

Finnish English
Verenpaine on (hieman) liian korkea. The blood pressure is (a little) too high.
Verenpaineesi on matala. Your blood pressure is low.
Älä huoli. Don’t worry.
Mitään turvotusta ei näy. There is no swelling visible.
Sinun pitää käydä rokotuksessa. You need to get vaccinated.
Tarvitset jäykkäkouristusrokotuksen. You need a vaccine for tetanus.
Kirjoitan sinulle lähetteen silmälääkärille. I’ll write you a referral to an eye specialist.
Biopsia osoittaa kasvaimen. The biopsy shows a tumor.
Testitulokset ovat saapuneet. The test results have come in.
Verikokeessa ei näkynyt mitään erikoista. There was nothing special visible in the blood test.
Verikokeessa ei löytynyt viruksen vasta-aineita. The blood test didn’t detect any antibodies to the virus.
Verikokeessa ei todettu mitään poikkeavaa. There were no abnormalities in the blood tests.
Testitulokset saapuvat parissa päivässä. The test results will arrive in a couple of days.
Kirjoitan sinulle reseptin. I’ll write you a prescription.
Sinulla on sähköinen resepti. You have an electronic prescription.
Paranet todennäköisesti parissa päivässä. You will probably recover in a couple of days.
Oireet eivät viitaa mihinkään vakavampaan. The symptoms don’t imply anything more serious.
Kirjoitan sinulle kolmen päivän sairausloma. I’ll write you three days of sickness leave.

5. Lisäohjeita – Further instructions

Mene kotiin ja lepää. Go home and rest.
Ota tämä lääke kolme kertaa päivässä. Take this medicine three times a day.
Ota tämä lääke heti aamulla. Take this medicine right away in the morning.
Ota tämä lääke ennen nukkumaanmenoa. Take this medicine before bedtime.
Käy apteekissa hakemassa nämä lääkkeet. Go get these medicines from the pharmacy.
Juo runsaasti nestettä mutta vältä alkoholia. Drink a lot of fluids but avoid alcohol.
Varaa uusi vastaanottoaika viikon päästä. Reserve a new apointment for next week.
Ota yhteyttä, jos oireet jatkuvat. Contact us if the symptoms persist.
Katsotaan, miltä se kahden kuukauden päästä näyttää. Let’s see how it looks two months from now.

Hei,
Should it be vatsaani? Is “i” missed or there is some grammatical rule behind it?

Sattua requires the mihin-form, so it’s “vatsaan“. You CAN make it “vatsaani” (which stresses that it’s my stomach), but it’s usually left out.

Similarly, “MY back hurts” is “Selkä on kipeä. Selkää särkee. Minulla on selkä kipeä.”, in which two of the three phrases don’t say it’s MY back at all. It’s not wrong to add -ni, it’s just different in Finnish :p
