1. About the Singer and Lyricist

Irwin Goodman (real name Antti Yrjö Hammarberg) was a folksinger that created the image of himself as a wicked, creepy drunkard. Most of his songs have to do with drinking alcohol. Other topics that are recurrent in his music are criticism of politicians and taxation, portrayals of the circumstances and feelings of the common Finn and commentaries on the Finnish attitude towards alcohol and money.

Markku helpfully commented to this article explaining that – while Irwin did compose this song – he didn’t write the lyrics for it. The lyricist for most of Irwin’s songs is Vexi Salmi (also knows as Emil Retee or Emil Von Retee).

2. About the Song

Ei tippa tapa (ja ämpäriin ei huku) “a drop won’t kill (and in a bucket one won’t drown)” is one of Irwin Goodman’s song about the common attitude of Finns towards alcohol consumption. The song got its name in the 1960s when Irwin was in Germany and someone said those word. The song was released in 1966 and is considered one of Irwin Goodman’s most popular hit songs.

3. Song Lyrics

Kaikki murheet huuhdotaan me sisältämme näin

Ei tippa tapa
Ja ämpäriin ei huku
Kun on alkuun päästy niin antaa mennä vaan
Ei tippa tapa
Ja ämpäriin ei huku
Kun on alkuun päästy niin antaa mennä vaan

Kaikkihan me täällä ollaan pieni hetki vaan
On aivan turhaa mammonaa näin koota päälle maan
Joku toinen kuitenkin sen ryyppää aikanaan
Juodaan kaikki nyt ja juokoon toiset omiaan

Ei tippa tapa
Ja ämpäriin ei huku
Kun on alkuun päästy niin antaa mennä vaan
Ei tippa tapa
Ja ämpäriin ei huku
Kun on alkuun päästy niin antaa mennä vaan

Antaa mennä vaan
Antaa mennä vaan

6. Cultural Background Titbits

One thing that might not be immediately clear to everyone is what Goodwin means by täyden lastin hain “I went to get a full load”. This goes back to the period between the year 1944 and 1970, when you needed a viinakortti “liquor card” to buy alcohol.

Alcohol use was closely monitored, and you could only buy alcohol from the store Alko. The viinakortti was employed in order to prevent the illegal sale of alcohol. Irwin Goodman’s phrase täysi lasti refers to the maximum amount of liquor one could buy with their liquor card: two liters of spirits, of which only one was allowed to be clear liquor.

A popular modification of the phrase goes “Ei tippa tapa, mutta tipasta voi tulla tapa“, which is meant as a reminder that alcohol is addictive: “A drop won’t kill but a drop can become a habit”. The phrase is a clever use of the double meaning of tapa. This word can be both a verb (ei tapa “doesn’t kill”), but it’s also a noun meaning “habit” (hyvä/huono tapa “a good/bad habit”).

Oi maammme…

Markku Mattila

Biisin on säveltänyt Irwin, mutta sanat Irwinin useimpiin biiseihin – tähänkin – teki Vexi Salmi, usein nimimerkillä Emil Retee, myöhemmin nimimerkki vaihtui Emil von Reteeksi. Eli analyysin kohde – laulun sanoitus – on Vexi Salmen lyriikkaa, ei Irwinin.

Iso kiitos! 🙂 En ollut tietoinen tästä.

Markku Maja

Irwin Goodman oli laulun esittäjä ja säveltäjä. Vexi Salmi oli kirjoittanut tekstin lauluun. Irwin Goomanin oikea nimi oli Antti Hammarberg.
